Eriskay to Berneray drive time
Brilliant Barra — Woke up to the promise of what should be beautiful sunny morning on Barra. Always a nice way to start the day on a road trip. Having delayed my initial ferry trip back so I could see the coolest little airport in action, I thought I would make my way back to the harbor to see if I could get a space on the next ferry back to Eriskay?
Fortunately, the ferry wasn’t too busy, so I managed to wait and get a space onboard. It was mostly cyclist road trip people going on the ferry, ready to set off on their road trip across the Uists section of their Hebridean Way adventure. As I had a little time to wait, I took the opportunity for a snack at the cafe and had a chat with some of the cyclists before it was time to board the ferry.
Ferry time
It was turning out to be a gorgeous day for another boat journey. Sun glistening on the crystal clear sea water, mountains on the horizon, what more could you ask for? On the short journey back to Eriskay, it was fantastic just to be on deck to take in the sea views and feel the warmth of the sun on your skin.
Disembarking from the ferry, I waved my new found Hebridean Way cyclists friends bon voyage and headed off on my journey. Although I had initially spent a few days winding my own way down across North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist to get to Barra, the distance top to bottom wasn’t actually that far, around 50 to 60 miles?
Driving day
Today seemed like the perfect weather for an afternoon stint behind the wheel? It would be pretty easy to have a leisurely drive back up to Berneray in one hit. You get days when you want to relax or explore, others where your happy just to drive. Today felt like a fun and relaxing day just to be driving and listening to some music as I made my way back up across the islands.
That didn’t mean I didn’t stop to take in a few bits of interest along the way of course. I wasn’t in a rush, and there’s always plenty of things that might catch my eye en-route. Plus you need to have a tea break once in a while on any journey.
and relax…
Sometimes the incidental seeming breaks can be a good time to process some of the road trip experiences thus far and just let them sink in. A great opportunity to be in the moment, to pause and reflect… plus of course to have a snack or drink!
The drive back was bliss. The weather perfect. Seeing the landscape roll on by was like watching a directors cut, extended version of your favorite movie play out before your eyes.

The islands roads were fairly devoid of traffic and so progress from South Uist up to Berneray was good, arriving just as the sun was going down. The weather was much better than the last time I was here, so I headed for a beach front stop for the evening.
Instead of the wind and rain that I had previously experienced here, tonight I was treated to a fabulous sunset by the sea. Another great day on my road trip around the Outer Hebrides draws to a close in a rather beautiful and special way.
